Google Announces "opt-out" Function For Owners Of Wireless Network, Aims To Mitigate Privacy

Google, as promised, responded to concerns about its policy on data collection, this morning, announcing a new "opt-out" for its location-based services. Under the new policy, operators may withdraw their WiFi networks at home geolocation database Google, simply adding "_nomap" at the end of the access point SSID. A network called "InformationSpells", for example, would be the name of "InformationSpells_nomap" and carefully removed from the Google server location. In a blog announcing the change, the company explained that this solution provides "the right balance of simplicity and protection against abuse," because it "helps protect against opting out of his other access point without your permission."
